Brindisi
November 3, 2011
You may be passing through Brindisi to catch the ferry but don’t miss out on Brindisi. Stay a while and see the city’s interesting sights.
Check out the Roman columns in Brindisi built when the town was the end of the Via Appia, the road stretching all the way from Rome to Brindisi. See the well where the Crusaders watered there horses, the Church of Santa Maria Casale and the historic town centre of Brindisi with the cathedral, museums and churches.
You could take a boat across the harbour to see the Monument to Italian sailors killed in action. It is an immense ships rudder and from the terrace there is a great view of Brindisi’s waterfront. The harbour itself is quite beautiful and at the entrance is the Aragonese castle.
Brindisi is also surrounded by other towns with their own history. Apart from all of this is the beautiful countryside is covered in olive groves and vineyards. The sea is such a wonderful shade of blue almost like aquamarine.
Dining out in Brindisi is a joy and the fresh seafood dishes are fantastic. At La Cantina the haunt of the bohemians, try the local dish of potatoes, rice and mussels, it’s delicious. If you prefer meat then go to the steakhouse. They have every BBQ’d meat you can think of.The grill is gigantic!! The meatballs and sausages are fantastic. All you have to do is choose your meat and watch it being grilled. You’ll return to Brindisi as I did.
